A trampoline is a steel-framed device with a tight piece of fabric pulled over the frame and attached by coil springs. There are many kinds or styles to choose from such as round, square, rectangular or octagonal. A variety of sizes are available to fit the amount of space you have. Safety experts advocate that children shouldn't use a standard trampoline because of injuring themselves. You can buy trampolines particularly made for children.
Bouncing up and down on a trampoline is so much fun for kids but it is also beneficial for their health. Experts say that it's the best way to exercise. It is very good for the cardiovascular system and it also helps balance. Rebounding strengthens every muscle in the body. There are also studies that show kids are benefiting in other ways. Motor skills, dexterity and hand-eye coordination are improved.
Even though trampolines are fun and great exercise you need to always supervise your children. Make sure your trampoline is set up in an unobstructed area where there are no objects such as fences, branches, cloth lines or poles. Also, never set up a trampoline close to a building such as your house or the garage. The area around the trampoline should be kept clear of any rocks, toys and anything that could cause injury. You should put your trampoline on material that has a cushioning effect. Sand, bark or a soft lawn would be ideal. Keep it stable by sinking it firmly into the ground. You could also use protective floor covering around it. Keep your kids off a trampoline if it becomes wet. If it rains or snows make sure the trampoline is completely dry before it is used.
Whether you let your children use a standard size trampoline or one made for them they need to be supervised. Children less than six years old shouldn't even use a trampoline. No more then one child should bounce at a time. Colliding with another jumper causes many accidental injuries. In fact, more then half of the injuries are due to more than one child jumping at a time. Bouncing shouldn't be allowed as a way to get off of the trampoline. Somersaults are something else that can be dangerous.
The trampoline itself needs to be checked to make sure all the equipment is safe. When you pick one out to buy, you should check to see what kind of safety features it has. Ask around or do research to find out what people say about their experience with different brands. The frame, springs and hooks need to be completely covered with shock absorbing pads. Check the trampoline regularly to make sure it is in good shape. Replace anything as soon as possible if it looks worn. Trampoline enclosure netting systems can be used to help protect against falling. It attaches directly to the frame without drilling or cutting. It is better to use an enclosure frame that attaches away from the trampoline.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents should never allow children to use home trampolines so the choice is up to you.
